Essential oils are concentrated fragrances from plants that have many beneficial properties.
They can help reduce stress, improve mood, relieve pain, strengthen the immune system and much more.
Essential oils have been used for centuries.
The scent of each plant is found in oil droplets inside or on top of the plant tissue.
Generally, essential oils are obtained from the plant’s flowers, leaves, branches, bark, root or fruit.
The purpose of an essential oil is to cure or alleviate a problem.
We are used to the idea that a medicine has to be ingested or applied.

There are many uses for essential oils.
- For example, you can choose an essential oil of your choice and add it to your sauna water. This way you can inhale the essential oil.
My favourite sauna companions (especially during sickness when my nose is stuffy) are clove, peppermint, lavender. - Aromatherapy humidifier. If you have a humidifier that can add essential oils, be sure to take advantage of this option.
Drizzle a few drops of lavender for a better night’s sleep.
During cold/flu season, use essential oils such as peppermint or spearmint.
This will help to keep your nose open at night.
I’ve also dribbled rosemary essential oil on a cotton cloth and put it on the headboard of the bed, it’s especially good for babies when nasal congestion keeps them awake.
Ginger essential oil during the stomach virus season. - Add to massage oil. In general, if you want to use an essential oil on your skin, always mix it with a base oil.
- Add to shampoo or conditioner to create a good fragrance.
- Add essential oil to the bath water, but as essential oils do not dissolve in water, be sure to mix with base oil first.
The fat will help the oil to dissolve in the water. - Home care. To make your home smell good and be energetic every day, use essential oils such as lemongrass, lime, lemon or orange.
Drizzle a few drops onto a washcloth.
To make the toilet smell good, I’ve dripped lemongrass on a toilet roll.
I’ve used cinnamon essential oil to get in the Christmas mood. - For insect control in summer. In summer, we are plagued by mosquitoes and other insects.
Make your own mosquito repellent: take 100ml of base oil (for example 20ml of castor oil and 80ml of avocado oil) and add 6 drops of lemongrass, 6 drops of citronella, 6 drops of tea tree oil, 3 drops of lavender oil, 6 drops of rosemary.
Mix everything together and put it in a bottle with a sprayer.
Simple and natural!

What does aromatherapy offer?
Aromatherapy is a great way to improve your well-being in many ways:

- Improves mood: essential oils such as citrus oils (e.g. orange and lemon) and rosemary can help boost mood and energy levels.
- Relieves pain: essential oils such as peppermint and eucalyptus can help relieve headaches, muscle aches.
For example, I like to mix a teaspoon of coconut oil with 10 drops of peppermint and lavender essential oils and then smear on the spots of the spice, massage the mixture on the side of the head and neck area.
The pain is gone after a few moments.
It is then important to relax and give the pain a moment to subside, or better still, fall asleep. - Strengthens the immune system: essential oils such as tea tree and eucalyptus can help strengthen the immune system and fight infections.
- Improves sleep quality: essential oils such as lavender can help relax before bedtime and improve sleep quality.
