During pregnancy, many women change their cosmetic habits. For example, more attention is paid to the ingredients in products. It is often discovered that many products contain ingredients that are not good for you or your baby. So which cosmetics are suitable for pregnant women and which to avoid?
CARMINE, E120, ETC.
Carmin is a well-known way of obtaining red colour in cosmetics.
Carmines are produced by crushing the dried bodies of the female tortoise Dactylopius coccus Costa and treating them with a solution of ammonium or sodium carbonate, and adding aluminium to clarify the solution.
Carmin is not only used in cosmetics, but also in food and beverages.
Therefore, when you consume products containing carmines, you are exposed to heavy metals, which should not be ingested even in small amounts, as it has been linked to various modern diseases such as autism.
I have written more about carmine HERE.
PARAFIIN
Paraffin wax is, in simplest terms, a by-product of petroleum.
Oil, on the other hand, is a non-perishable and toxic natural resource.
Paraffin wax is best known for candles, but it is also widely used in cosmetics.
The reason paraffin is used in cosmetics is because it is cheap.
While paraffin wax used in the cosmetics industry softens the skin (you will have heard of paraffin treatments in salons and spas), in reality it is a chemical.
SYNTHETIC DYES
There are many different types of synthetic dyes, some of which are also used in cosmetics because they give bright colours.
The best known of these is RED40 or magic red.
Many dyes are banned because they cause allergic reactions, hyperactivity, etc.
Synthetic dyes are synthesised from petroleum.
Is it possible to replace them?
Of course!
With mineral and vegetable pigments!
One of the most popular is iron oxide, which is found in nature and does not cause allergies, etc.
If you’re interested in nutrition, find out more about azo dyes.
SYNTHETIC FRAGRANCES
Fragrances can cause allergies, skin irritation, itching, headaches, fatigue, dermatitis, pigmentation spots, and can also be toxic and carcinogenic.
Essential oils can be used as a substitute for synthetic fragrances.
Please note that fragrance oils are synthetic.
For example, at VegePure you can find Grass 100% essential oils.
NANOOSAKESED
Nanoparticles are everywhere: in objects, household chemicals, food, beverages, clothing, electronics, construction, footwear and even COSMETICS!
It would be easier to list the things that don’t have them.
In the nano world, the particles are extremely tiny, just 1 millionth of a millimetre.
Nanoparticles are not much talked about and their harmfulness is still being studied.
However, what can be said is that toxic ultrafine particles react very violently because of their ability to penetrate the cell membrane of organisms.
BISMUTH OXYCHLORIDE
Bismuth oxychloride is a synthetic material and does not occur naturally.
It gives the skin a youthful glow.
TALK
Talc is mined from the earth and this matt white powder is used in many cosmetics and baby powders!
Talc is often found in the wild with asbestos, which is why it must be well cleaned when it is mined, as exposure to asbestos can cause several types of cancer.
I recommend watching the documentary Toxic Beauty | Jupiter | ERR, which is about the cosmetics industry and Johnson & Johnson, which has been producing talc-based baby powder for over a hundred years.
2019.
In October 2009, they recalled about 33,000 jars of baby powder from the market when the FDA found asbestos in a sample of the popular product.
PARABENES
Parabens are used as a preservative to prevent bacteria from multiplying in products.
Parabens have been found in breast feed and breast milk.
Parabens cause allergies, skin irritation, can be toxic and accumulate in the body.
There are also natural preservatives instead of parabens.
BOONUS!
Did you know that when you read the ingredients in a cosmetic product, they are listed in volume order?
Perhaps the most abundant are listed first.
The ingredient in the smallest quantity is listed last.
WHAT IS SUITABLE?
Of course, we cannot 100% avoid all toxic chemicals today.
However, we can be more aware and make the best choice for ourselves from all the products on offer. With the products sold at VegePure, you can be sure that these products do not contain any of the chemical and allergenic substances I described above.
Lastly, I would advise pregnant and non-pregnant women to always choose natural and organic products, to research their origin, etc.
Also, the word vegan does not always mean that the product is chemical-free.
